Amir Sulaiman: All Love Poems, All Night

  • Duende 468 19th Street Oakland, CA, 94612 United States

Amir Sulaiman's 'All Love Poems, All Night' makes its first US appearance at the Duende bodega in Oakland, California. Within the performance, Amir shares verses about the swollen heart and the broken one; about love lost and found. The evening will explore the sensual and spiritual; the brutal and beautiful reality of what it is to love, to be loved and to be love. For the Oakland performance, Amir has invited the acclaimed spiritual practitioner Hasnaa At-Tauhidi to prepare the sanctuary for this journey.

If God had me choose between
seeing the sun rise
and the sun set
everyday
or
seeing the beauty
of your rising and your setting
only once;
it would be perpetually noon on your face

************************

Who would want their heart broken
but now that mine has been split open
I wonder, who would want their heart closed
ever
Can you drink from the coconut without striking it
Can you smell the aloeswood without lighting it

************************

my hands cannot hold
what my heart cannot let go of

my palms dusty with absence

is there love without madness
is there fire without heat

anyone can imagine a sea without shore
no one can imagine a shore without sea
my love is lovely with or without me

but me without my love

oh God
