Amir Sulaiman: The Lover, The Love & The Beloved

  • Starline Social Club 2236 Martin Luther King Junior Way Oakland, CA, 94612 United States (map)

"The Lover, The Love & The Beloved" is a love poem. It is a love poem about someone, it is a love poem about love itself as the why/how the universe was created and the why/how it is sustained. It is a poem about love as the technology that Allah used and uses to create and maintain the universe. It is the Divine love that manifests in every sacred and profane matter and moment. The poem crosses all of time and all space, beginning in pre-universe and ending in post existence; expanding to encase the grand stars and to the split the tiny atoms.

The poem for some will sound like a love poem for prophet Muhammad, prayers and peace upon him and his family, and that’s good and accurate. For others it will be a cosmic love poem and that’s good and accurate. For others it will sound like a broken hearted lament for love won and lost and that's good and accurate.

It is an epic poem that I have been writing for 6 years now. The most challenging verses I've ever encountered to write. The poem is not yet finished but I want to share the process although it is unnerving for me as a writer. I want to share the process because in the affair of love, the most crucial element, besides love itself, is courage.

I gained your love
then lost my mind.
what a bargain.

I love you impossibly
loving you,
my heart is holding more than it can
loving you,
is making me more than I am
your beauty is more than what my soul can bear

When I am dying of thirst
you are water

When I am drowning to death
you are breath

I love you impossibly
I love you impossibly
I'd trade my limbs to hold you
I'd trade my eyes to see you
